Translator tool, changing ?
Hello koha-devel & koha-translate, Users translating Koha to french are regularly reporting that pootle is a poor tool, not very efficient. Someone suggested transifex, that is free for OpenSource softwares (https://www.transifex.com) I just opened an account, created a koha project, added french translation for 3.12 It seems *much* more friendly & efficient than pootle. Is there someone wanting to investigate a little bit more this tool ? (if yes, create an account & drop me a mail with your transifex nick) Could switching to this tool be a good idea ? -- Paul POULAIN - BibLibre http://www.biblibre.com Free & Open Source Softwares for libraries Koha, Drupal, Piwik, Jasper
As a non-translating tool-wielding person, I'll just say that I'm willing to support whatever tool you folks need! I'd like to hear from some other prominent translators on this! -Ruth On Thu, Mar 7, 2013 at 9:59 AM, Paul Poulain <paul.poulain@biblibre.com>wrote:

The only "weakness" I see in transifex is that if they ever change their model to start charging FOSS projects, they've got the data and can cause some mischief. If we want to change from Pootle, but still control the server/data, take a look at http://weblate.org. The interface is a little like Pootle, but I'll leave judgment calls up to the people that actually *use* it; I just know a peer who has used it, and liked it. -Ruth On Thu, Mar 7, 2013 at 10:47 AM, D Ruth Bavousett <druthb@gmail.com> wrote:

Yay, you remembered the name :) I didn't :( We briefly talked about it last december http://irc.koha-community.org/irclog/koha/2012-12-10#i_1143014 I still think we should try it, but I have something like no time at all until at least April -- Mirko PS. we should decide on one list to continue this discussion, I would say koha-translate seems more appropriate?

Isn't http://help.transifex.com/features/api/index.html at least partially answering it ? (I haven't checked what it provides)

I'll be happy to spin up Weblate with a bit of our current data, if someone can commit to looking it over; it's going to be next week before I get to it--preparing for a move! --DRB On Thu, Mar 7, 2013 at 11:30 AM, Paul Poulain <paul.poulain@biblibre.com>wrote:

Hi all I haven't looked to deep, but there is https://github.com/transifex/transifex (along with https://github.com/transifex) which is GPL2, of course I fully suspect the SaaS version has more features, but it would be good for as as a free software project to use free software tools. So if weblate doesn't work out, running up an instance of Transifex ourselves might be a possibility. Chris

Without having tried it, I don't like the SaaS-only approach of Transifex, and I especially do not like it in conjunction with the slogan »Take control of your localization experience«. There is no way we can just switch the translation platform. I'm all for trying alternatives as I agree Pootle is not much fun to work with, but those should be tested carefully. And I would really prefer a platform under our control over one that only claims to be and looks like it is the opposite. -- Mirko
I can hardly call myself a prominent translator. I've only done some cleaning up before leaving the files to the company we use. Still I've been able to see that there is room for improvement when it comes to web based workflow with translations. You lose some features when using offline tools like Poedit but gain a lot of speed. I'll leave deciding the way to go to the pros, but that improvement is possible is my two cents.
