In particular I have a library with spaces in the barcode. The whitespace filter would remove those spaces on scan, and would render them invalid. This is undesired behavior, we don't want to re-barcode some hundreds of books when it would be easier to have an "off" option here. Check In triggers transfers and other situationally undesirable behavior when the user is simply trying to determine the current status (checked out? on hold? in transit?) of an item. Checking In an item more than once also has undesirable ramifications in some situations.
