I turned on the uppercasesurnames preference. I opened my record for editing and my surname appeared in uppercase. I clicked save without changing anything, and my surname was now in uppercase (as displayed on the checkout page). Opening my record for editing again, I deleted my surname and re-typed it. Again, it appeared in uppercase. After saving, however, it was back to lower case. As part of the "Patron toolbar," it has unchanging functionality across patron pages. So the print button doesn't print the page you're on, it prints the patron record (brief patron details and list of checkouts).
