From this assumption why don't you just test if the logged in user is the one defined in the AutoSelfCheckID pref? The prefs should not be updated using set_preference, it will modify the values in the cache. We could call set_in_cache for all prefs, but it may spend too much time to process all of them. Or we may not need it anymore. It will be good to benchmark the different possibilities.
