To allow more precise searching of our Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) classification which has led to greater precision for our retrieved results from searching. However in the UDC classification notation there is used a colon which means that both concepts in a title have equal weight. A search for the UDC call number 34:339.5(411) gets no hits whereas if you substitute a point for a colon the results can be obtained 34.339.5(411). I would expect koha-common to depend on koha-perldeps and koha-deps, but instead koha-common doesn't depend on it, and they diverted in the list of things Koha requires (memcached is added to koha-common but not koha-deps). This would allow for 'overlaying' of order items with full item records when it is not possible to assign either a matching barcode or a matching item number in the file being imported. This could be done by checking the Not-For-Loan value: if it is -1 then the item is an on-order item and can safely be removed. This would obviously not suit all library workflows and could be dangerous for some, so would need to be either a syspref or an option to select during import, or both. I'm imagining something like a syspref that lets us say "if an item has notforloan of [X], then allow item overlay without matching an itemnumber or barcode."
