In our current library system, we use long loans (loans with a guaranteed minimum due date, but a much much longer hard due date), with a recall function. This is only in use for parts of the content. Koha does not support this, so we're looking at using auto renewal as a method to give a reasonable resemblance of long loans. We also want advance notices to be sent when the due date is about to arrive, but having an advance notice and then an automatic renewal shortly after will produce a multitude of notices that will be considered as faulty by the end user. The statistics table is *very* slow to join borrowers or items against, because borrowernumber and itemnumber are not indexed. It also caused a 12 hour run of updatedatabase on site that had a large statistics table, when running the upgrade that fixed bug 14598 (itemtype is not set on statistics by C4::Circulation::AddReturn). However, the edited files have to be saved and restored with each release. Otherwise they are overwritten. As an enhancement or alternative, the existing news system can be used to implement a complementing help system. Similar to the news, the text can be created for all branches or for individual branches. Help is context sensitive (based on the existing help system), and it can be created / edited directly from the help page (based on a user permission). When a record has an item linked to an host item, both in Staff mode and in OPAC is visible in the item to which record is linked to, but this is not true the other way around, in the "mother" record you don't see in the items if there are records linked to that specific item(s)(The only option is the "show analytics" feature).
