Jared resolved this issue with bug 8550, which has made it back as far as 3.8.4. I've double-checked master now, and it's working fine. Those two queries use "SELECT * FROM table", fetch the datas with "$var = $sth->fetchrow", and use "$var" as a boolean condition.
