I'm guessing the patron information isn't available because it wasn't returned as part of the check-in process? "We have about 10 item types that are "media" (CDs, DVDs, records, etc.). Our circulation department would like to restrict checkouts to three media items total, not three of each kind." MySQL allows for such illegal dates. A database like PostgreSQL, which is much more strict when it comes to correct data, does not allow illegal values as date values. When creating your items on order the possibility to create items there does not make sense. When changing the quantity the uncertain price will be unset and the quantity changes to your entered number.
