Given sufficient numbers of patrons and unindexed columns sort by, the search query generated will create a temp table so large it can fill up the temp disk and prevent the db server from functioning. This can lead to server issues as the database resources are used up running many copies of the same report. To avoid that an easy to achieve fix would be to add a configurable timeout via max_statement_time to the query. This way the query would abort automatically if going over the time limit.
