about MARC format

This mail is primarily for Steve and continues an IRC conversation we had on friday, but I think it could interest other koha developers and readers of this ml. The problem : We have 2 problems with MARC-DB structure : The 1st, which is solved, was that repeatable tags we not rightly stored in our structure : thus, it was hard to differenciate lines. The problem will be solved by adding a "tag number" field in the DB. Should be cvsed soon... The 2nd, which is still to solve, is multiple-items support. We plan to support many MARC (MARC21, UNIMARC...) by having a parameter table. But the BIG problem is that koha "items" are managed completly differently in MARC21 and in UNIMARC. In fact, in true-UNIMARC they are not supported... In france, they are supported by a "almost-official" document, the "995 tag", which defines the 995 tag as the koha-item field. So, when there are more than 1 item of a given biblio, how to manage them in MARC-DB. Quite impossible with actual DB structure. I've had a simple idea during the we, which, I'm almost sure, is the best one : In our MARC sructure, we have a old-DB-"biblio" field that links the old DB and the MARC one. We should add a "koha-item" field in the DB that links a old-DB item and a "MARC-item". In the MARC-API, we should add a MARCadditem, MARCmoditem and MARCdelitem sub. I'll try this very soon, unless someone (steve ?) points me an error. -- Paul

On-line reservations

Is anyone doing work for on-line requests and email notification via OPAC? If so, then please let me know. Otherwise I'm hacking some stuff to do this that should work with current 1.2.3 RC. I am not a coder so It would be better if someone else were doing this... (I don't like wasting time on stuff that others do better)... but I think I could learn enough to create something usable that others may modify or replace later. If there are no other takers, then I will amke a start and try to keep new code separate so it can be added like a "contrib" rather than a diff. Missing search.pl parameter in 1.2.3RC1

A possible search.pl bug? After running a search, and viewing the screen that says: "You searched on keyword and, 61 results found" if you click on any of the number gifs, then i think the "&keyword=xxx" parameter is missing from the URL, so you get invalid result: "You did not specify any seach criteria" R.

Call for Questions

Someone had the good idea of adding a section to the Koha documentation on migration from other OPAC tools to Koha. This, naturally, requires some knowledge of what people have been using prior to Koha, and how they handled their transitions.... in other words, break out the war-stories! Please send any information on your past move to Koha, or planned move for that matter, to nsr_koha(a)hotmail.com Source code from transition tools/utilities, etc will be happily accepted, and duly credited (bonus points if you add commenting). What I'm need for your submission to be useful :) : Name of prior-to-koha catalog, who made it, what version, etc. who and how transition was managed any details on reformatting/etc scripts how data was extracted from the old catalog application how data was imported into Koha how changeover and phasing out of the old catalog happened. As always, documentation and source contributors will be duly recognized in the manual. Nick ...documentation compiler, Koha.
