1.2.3RC7

The 1.2.3RC7 release candidate is on sourceforge now. Note that the installer does not check for the existence of HTML::Template module in RC7, but that perl module is most definitely required. That's been fixed in CVS, but make sure you have that module installed if you want to test 1.2.3RC7. Steve.

1.2.3RC7 and vacation

I've put up a 1.2.3RC7 tarball on sourceforge. [or at least I _tried_. SF keeps logging me out before I get there. I'll post it at http://www.haz.cmsd.bc.ca/koha-1.2.3RC7.tar.gz and put it up on SF tomorrow morning before I leave] Recent changes include: New access control flags. These are currently only applied to the "member" section With sample data, librarian will have access to members, jdoe and jsmith will not. Flags can be set using the "Modify Flags" link on the edit members page. Modularized installation installer.pl has been completely modularized koha.upgrade has been started Also, I will be on vacation for two weeks starting tomorrow. I will be pretty much completely incommunicado during that time excepting possible stops at Internet cafes, and a couple of days spent at a brother-in-law's house. Translation: If 1.2.3RC7 is badly broken, it'll likely stay that way. If there are problems with 1.2.2, I'm hoping somebody else will deal with them. :) Steve.

26 July, 2002 To the Koha community; Hallo, It looks like another short note this week, my wife turns **[1] years old and I've been a bit distracted. ;) This certainly doesn't mean that we haven't been busy though. As you'll see below, the Koha project is rolling along with a full head of steam! 1.2 I'm very happy to see Koha 1.2.2 out and about. 1.2.1 managed over 20 downloads/day (from sourceforge) for the nearly 20 days since it came out. We seem to be moving more copies with each release ... I hope this trend continues. 1.2.3 is also on the drawing boards. It features a variety of improvements, including more templating. Snapshots of the 1.2.3 branch are available at sourceforge -- these are not release quality yet, so be careful (we'd love to hear about your experiences though). 1.4 Paul Poulain has posted a request for help on the 1.4 branch. He has put together a page of things still to be done for the new MARC version of Koha. Please see: <http://www.saas.nsw.edu.au/wiki/index.php?page=ToDoMARC> for more details. It is very encouraging to see all of the progress on 1.2, but we need to make sure that 1.4 doesn't slip because of it. If you're able to lend a hand, and aren't already up to your elbows in 1.2, please pick a task from Paul's list and get to work. Community I've got several oddments to mention here. The first is a bit of advertisement, I've got the english and french versions of these notes archived at <http://pate.eylerfamily.org/geek/Koha.html>. As additional translations show up, they'll be archived as well. I've also started reaching out to the Perl community a bit more. Recently a new website has been created to help newer programmers to develop their skills. I've added Koha to the list of projects seeking 'apprentices'. Take a look at <http://apprentice.perl.org/> for more information (or to sign up to work on Koha or one of the other worthy projects there). With the growing interest in translating Koha, it is interesting to see that a book about creating accessible web interfaces has been published on-line, <http://diveintoaccessibility.org/table_of_contents.html>. If you'd like to take on a quick, non-programming project -- you could read through this book, play with Koha in light of your new-found knowledge, and let the koha-developers list know about any discrepancies you find. It looks like we've got a fun ride ahead of us. Hang on and have fun. permission flag proposal

I'd like to propose a permission flag be added to the "borrowers" table. My thoughts are we could have flags like: superlibrarian (can do any intranet functions) circulate (can circulate books) catalogue (can add/modify bibliographic data and holdings info) parameters (can modify Koha parameter settings) borrowers (can add/modify patron information) permissions (can modify these flags) reserveforothers (can set reserves for any patron) borrow (can borrow items) reserveforself (can reserve books for themselves) The big reason for this is that the new authentication system needs to determine which users have access to intranet functions and which users are just patrons and should have no access to intranet. In most cases, probably all that is needed is a "librarian" flag, but I thought I'd make it possible for it to be more fine-grained. I was thinking of using a 32 bit integer for storing the flags so up to 32 flags can be set. Thoughts? Steve.

Koha 1.2.2 has been released. Special thanks (again) to Steve Tonnesen, who drove this release to completion. 1.2.2 is a significant bug squashing release: * checkvalidisbn() routine fixed * upload marc records routine fixed * some improvements to installer.pl and koha.upgrade * subjectsearch.pl was missing in OPAC interface * koha.upgrade wasn't modifying the Z39.50 daemon startup scripts properly * installer.pl and koha.upgrade warn if installing a release candidate * installer.pl asks for the location of apache's config file if it can't find it * Fix to updatedatabase script that fixes a problem with full acquisitions * Fixed bad link in detail.tmpl Many people have combined in testing this release, and we expect it to be the best Koha yet! We encourage you to get this new release and give it a spin. We think you'll like what you see. We plan on continuing to improve Koha, and would love to have you come along on this exciting journey. I've taken the liberty of registering Koha at <apprentice.perl.org>. This site (which was just announced) is designed to allow people to sign on to work on existing Perl projects to build their skills. I think this might be a big help in filling needs like those Paul mentioned. The Koha users mailing list may also be an appropriate place to place calls for assistance. I'd also encourage projects members to talk to their local Perl communities, mailing lists, etc. thanks, -pate

MARC version, HELP needed [long] and [important]

Hi guys, Those who follow the CVS mailing list may have notice a few CVS-commit yesterday. few, but VERY IMPORTANT. They are the 1st commit i made for the MARC stuff in koha that make koha USE MARC-DB (or at least begins to...) If you play sometimes with a cvs version, you MUST follow the following upgrade operations : * install MARC::Record package, from cpan or sourceforge * OVERWRITE File.pm and USMARC.pm. The original misses 1 functionnality we absolutly need in koha (reading a MARC from a variable, not from a file). Thanks to Steve, who modified MARC::Record. * modify your DB by adding marcschema.sql tables * populate new tables by launching fill_usmarc.pl. If you do it, the old-koha is expected to work as in version 1.2. if you don't, NOTHING WILL WORK, as sql will fail most of time ;-\ * *TEST HELP NEEDED* * Test this dev version, and notice bugs you should find. The rule is quite simple : APPARENTLY, NOTHING HAS CHANGED. If you find something new, it shall be a bug... If you can test this version and approve it, we could continue the road to MARC-management. If you spend some time on it, pls make a report on this list if you find no bugs, or report bugs on bugs.koha.org (use Version=CVS and assigned to paul.poulain(a)free.fr) * *MARC HELP NEEDED* * the MARC version of koha is supposed to accept any MARC format. Do do this, there is a parameter table that contains the meaning of every tag code. for instance, there is only a definition of USMARC in english. We need to have some other definitions. If you want help : you just have to create a file with some rows : * the tag number * the subfield code * the complete meaning of the tag/subfield. It's usually an excerpt of the xxMARC norma. It's used in the librarian interface. * the meaning of the tag/subfield, simplified. It's how we could call the tag/subfield for an opac-using person. Not ALL the tag/subfield pairs have to be filled with this value. * if the tag/subfield is mandatory (0=NO, 1=YES) * if the tag/subfield is repeatable (0=NO, 1=YES) Please, create this with a spreadsheet, putting all values of a given tag/subfield on 1 line. Then export it in CSV format. If you prefer, you can directly build a text file, but ALWAYS put the 6 values on the same line, separated by what you want. sample : 100;a;"Unified LOC Title (see red book USMARC page 24)";"book title";1;0 100;b;"Unified LOC subtitles";"";0;1 ... (note this example means nothing i think !) * *DEV HELP NEEDED* * a LOT of stuff is still to do on MARC-koha. On the wiki (http://www.saas.nsw.edu.au/wiki/index.php?page=ToDoMARC) i made a page with what is still to do, with some ideas about how to do it.
