How to make self-referential URLs in Koha

Hi all, With some recent code, I've been using creating self-referential URL in Koha using CGI->url(), and passing it as a value. With CGI, the URL is correct (ie starting with /cgi-bin/koha). With Plack, it's not, because the OPAC is mounted as "/opac". I worked around this by rewriting the self-referential URL in my code, but I was wondering if anyone else had any thoughts on this. I've noticed there are a few places in Koha where we use CGI->url() and I'm guessing we may have unexpected bugs in Plack-enabled Koha as a result. Of course, one workaround would be to have /opac and /intranet aliases or URL rewriting in Apache, so that the self-referential URLs created by Plack still end up resolving. I wonder if that's the easiest path forward. In the past, I have wondered if we could get rid of "/cgi-bin/koha" as a path prefix all together (especially as cgi-bin scares security tools), but it's so deeply embedded in Koha at this point that it seems a huge task to replace it. Long-term support version of Koha (bug 31008)

At the Development IRC meeting on 8 June 2022 the issue of having a long-term support version of Koha (Koha LTS) was discussed. (It has been discussed and proposed in the past.) Summary ======= General agreement was reached that: 1. A long-term support (LTS) version of Koha would be for 2.5 to 3 years 2. We would start with oldstable (which is now 21.11) 3. There would be an LTS maintainer role for each cycle (there is no expectation that this is the same person for up to three years - it is preferable that it is someone different each cycle) 4. The mandate for the LTS version would cover: . security fixes . things that are broken (such as APIs (external), dependencies (such as Elasticsearch), etc), and . essential back ports only, once past oldoldstable 5. It would be an irregular release - only when something is needed once past oldoldstable 6. We would inform the Koha Community about the LTS version of Koha, what it is, and what it means for support (including updates to the website, mailing list, manual section on supported versions, etc) Next steps ======== Your feedback is welcome on the proposed LTS version of Koha. Feel free to provide this however you wish, including replying to this email, IRC, and on bug 31008. It will then be discussed again, and the approach confirmed at the next available Development IRC Meeting (ideally this would have been the 22 June 2022 meeting, but I've just sent this email!). ElasticSearch Geoserch

Hi! We are currently discussing a project where a customer wants to add a geosearch to Koha (store lat/lng in biblio, use Elastic geo queries [0] together with a leaflet.js map to find biblios in a certain area). I assume that might be of interest to Koha in general? I also assume that this will only be possible via some changes to Koha core code (i.e. adding a new search field to ES and Koha, define mappings), while some things might be doable as a plugin (the "frontend" map etc). Before we start hacking I'd like to get some feedback from you: * Would something like this be considered to be added to future Koha versions? * Do you think it's feasable / possible to add to Koha? * Has anybody maybe done a geosearch before? (I couldn't find anything..) Multilingual label printing in Koha (praise be to Bywater!)

Hi all, I had a problem where I couldn't print Chinese and English on barcode labels using Koha's built-in Label Creator, since it uses individual font files and I couldn't find a free and open individual font that supports both European and Chinese scripts. Fortunately, I recalled that Kyle @ ByWater Solutions created this plugin: https://github.com/bywatersolutions/koha-plugin-label-maker. It uses HTML and CSS to generate labels in the browser, and the browser is already capable of using multiple different fonts to support multiple different scripts. The plugin did a great job of rendering barcodes with both Chinese and English written on them! Thanks, Bywater Solutions, for saving the day! -- Nerdy thoughts: If I look at the "Computed" styles in the F12 tools in Chrome on Windows 10, it says the English is rendered using the "Times New Roman" font, and it says that the Chinese is rendered using the "Microsoft YaHei" font. If I do the same thing in Microsoft Word, the English is in "Calibri" and the Chinese is in "DengXian". If you read https://fonts.google.com/noto/use#how-are-noto-fonts-organized it says "If you have text in multiple languages that use different scripts, either the app or the person who typesets the text needs to switch between the different fonts accordingly." I'm not an expert on fonts, so I'm not sure what would be involved with getting Koha's PDF libraries to use different fonts for different scripts. I don't know how Chrome and Word detect that they need to use a different font. I don't know if it's a map of Unicode codepoints to existing font mappings, or if it iterates through a list of fallbacks, or what. I probably won't go too far down this rabbit hole, since the ByWater Koha Plugin solved my immediate use case, but it's an interesting topic, and this is a major limitation with Koha's Label Creator, so we might want to think about a change in the future... Elasticsearch: Minor fix ?

Hi all, Suddenly my D10 dev box does not install anymore. Reason: We now require Search::Elasticsearch to be 6.80. And under D10 I have 6.00. This is called a minor fix on bug 25669. Which is currently not my perspective. Not talking about further implications yet.. Can we fix this fix ? Marcel
