Some thoughts heading to 2.0

As we head towards to 2.0 release, I have a couple of thoughts and ideas that I wanted to share. These thoughts were based around doing an install of 1.9.3 (many thanks to all especially Paul and Mike Hansen for the effort they have put in). Templates & Translations ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Currently the distribution comes with a few different templates, and hopefully as we finialise 2.0 more translations. One thought that I had was to seperate out the different Templates and Translations into seperate installable files, so that Koha itself is only distributed with the default templates in english. If we can make subsequent files available ie default-fr-1.9.3.tar.gz for the french default etc (please note that I am not picking on the French, I am just using it as an example), etc then people can install and configure the translations as they need them, this would also allow the translation teams a little more time to get the translations complete without holding up the main releases. The same could also be done for new templates ie. vanilla-en-1.9.3.tar.gz. This may encourage people to add new Templates, to the point of we could possible have a themes.koha.org etc. I am intested in peoples comments and opinions, please refrain from flaming the list, but all flames will be accepted via private mail. Changes to borrowers table in 1.9.3

I notice that the borrowers table in ver. 1.9.3 has been altered to include columns for postal codes. But the old columns (ver. 1.9.2) for password, flags and userid are gone. How do we save passwords from our old system to allow people to login to Koha? (In other words, where does Koha now store the userid and password?) More about templates

I've been working on an NPL version of the intranet template for a couple weeks now, and I'm faced with a conundrum now that 1.9.3 is out: What's the best way to 'upgrade' the custom templates I've got? Am I simply faced with the tedious job of going through and comparing the new files to my custom files? Is this a problem that can only be addressed in the future, making these upgrades easier? Hello, In some script there are variable names ending with ".x", ".y". Is there any special meaning for that? It's quite unusual to name a variable that way. Please don't take offense. There are 81 bug reports left in the queue (thought more might be added if we find them along the way), most of those need to be closed before 2.0.0 goes out the door. Hi Guys, I'm back from Soissons, Tropheesdulibre. I'm sure you're interested to know who wins. So, here is the answer... In Game category, it's VegaStrike. In General Public category, it's Weasel Reader In Accessibility, it's Gok, In Educational, it's Gcompris In TodoManagement, it's Dolibarr, In Application Agencies. Hmm... let me remember... I think I forget... One minut, there was 3 candidates : Localis, from Mose, mm... no, that was not him. A nice guy anyway. CPS... ah, yes, i remember this guy. But I don't remember seeing it winning anything. Koha. Was Koha the winner ? Let me think a little second. hmmmm.... Ah, that's it, I remember : yes, Koha wins. :-D :-D Note : I just arrived at home. Marc Table Description

hi We are finishing to convert an old database and we are currently trying to fill the marc table. I am currently having problem with two fields of the marc_word table: tagorder subfieldorder I have the idea that the two fields contain the number of the field and subfield entered when adding a biblio/item. The tagnumber tells if the tag is the first asked , or the second, and so on, in the form. The subfield number indicates if the field is the first field or the second (and so on) of the tag. For example, if i need to enter five fields to add a biblio : (215a,215b,400a,801a,995f, for example) each field will have a tag number, from 1 to 4 (1,1,2,3,4), and a subfield number, respectively 1,2,1,1,1. I hope you will understand, it is not that easy to explain ! :) My question is : do Koha need those fields (for researches or something else ) , or can i leave them empty ? IMPORTANT : migration tool arrived in CVS

Hi everybody, The NEW bulkmarcimport script everybody was waiting for just arrived in CVS. It will be released with 1.9.3 (probably today ?) It's located (in CVS tree) at $koharoot/misc/bulkmarcimport.pl It loads an iso2709 file into the ACTIVE Database. My 1st tests on sample files shows it works quite fine. Feel free to try it. How it works ? enter ./bulkmarcimport in a console, and look. Note : i'm proud, because it's less than 100 lines long => 99 lines !!! Note to *NPL* : i didn't test this on the file you send to me, as my MARC parameters are UNIMARC at the moment. I release the 1.9.3, then I test it.
