Thanks for the testing! Your testing pointed out some small problems which I have corrected. I wasn't removing the '-'s from ISBN's. I am now. You can put in the dashes or leave 'em out. They'll be removed before querying the Z39.50 servers. I wasn't accessing the full AMICUS database at the National Library of Canada, so whoever searched for "Global action for biodiversity: an international framework for implementing the Convention on biological diversity" will find that it finds it successfully now. I've added a note saying how many records were found for each query in the queue. Now I really need to get full MARC support in Koha so that all of this data doesn't have to get mangled. :) Steve.

Z3950 searches

Z3950 searches appear to be working now. This is a pretty rough and roudy interface. Definitely needs some cleaning up. However, if you want to try my Z3950 search, go to: http://142.28.224.14/ Acquisitions Marc Importing Tool Enter a query term and select one of ISBN, LCCN, or Title. At the moment, it searches the Library of Congress and the National Library of Canada. Steve.

I just tried the latest Net::Z3950 perl module and the rawdata() call now works. Woohoo! That means that I can now do Z3950 searches and download the raw marc data directly from Koha. Now I just wish I had two sweet clues how to format Z3950 queries. I know that @attr 1=4 "Linux" returns records with the title Linux. Anybody know what I have to use to search on ISBN or LCCN? Marc Importing Tool

I've revised the marc importing tool at: http://142.28.224.14/cgi-bin/koha/acqui.simple/marcimport.pl If you don't like typing in long URLs, just go to 142.28.224.14 and follow the "Acquisitions" and "Marc Importing tool" links. so that you can upload sets of marc records to the server. Give it a whirl, if you like. Try not to upload too large of a set of MARC records, as it may take a long time to process. Besides, my Internet connection is not very snappy here. :) Try to stick to less than 25 or so MARC records. Steve.

FAQ

I know I've been... not contributing anything for quite awhile (a few pesky and inconvenient problems associated with finishing my degree, my apologies to everyone). I was going to start working on the FAQ which has been on the list for me at Sourceforge for quite awhile.... since it is intended for the user community, I was going to get submissions from them as to what it should include. Thoughts? Objections? Other requests? The quicky links page I threw together is still there at http://www.people.virginia.edu/~nsr4n/Koha if anyone needs it for anything? Randomly, the test drive option at Koha.org may have a problem in http://hlt.katipo.co.nz/catalogue/ has a link ("acquisitions") to http://hlt.katipo.co.nz/catalogue/acquisitions, which doesn't exist. In case you hadn't heard, the OpenBook people are in a "technical beta", but warn users that the database (and anything else) may be unusable in future versions... assuming you're interest in the status of the Koha "offspring." I have a collection of small libraries at my institution interested in using Koha, but they all want to know if there is some form for easy entry of data -- they all would be using volunteer labor to manually key in a fair amount of their collection information (probably from old style card catalogs) and really would like as-simple-as-possible forms for that. I see the order/receive forms, but don't see (forgive my missing it if it is there, I've not played with the acquire setup in a loooong time) a form to manually create items. The ability key in an ISBN and have a lookup (say at some National Library MARC/Z39.50) server is there. I know the MARC project is going along well -- what are the chances of them being able to do that (instead of typing in complete records) soon? I was considering trying to pitch in on that over this past summer, but was... daunted... by the scope of the MARC format. Thanks, apologies for the rambling length of this, Nick

Reports

I'm also starting to think about how to handle reports in a generic fashion. I'm guessing that reports are the kind of thing that will need to be fine tuned to the individual installation, but we need some way of being able to update Koha without breaking existing custom reports settings. Also, there must be some fairly standard reports that could be included with the Koha distribution? Steve.

classification, dewey, and subclass

What exactly is the "classification" field for? I'm having problems with modbibitem trouncing on my subclass. It appears that the "class" field in modbibitem.pl contains "$dewey$classification$subclass" and when an item has a subclass but no dewey, the classification gets set to the value that the subclass used to have and the subclass gets blanked out. I don't want to implement a fix for this that breaks whatever you are doing in NZ, but I don't understand why it is this way? Why doesn't modbibitem have separate fields for dewey, classification and subclass? Steve.
