WE would never have consider doing OpenBook or anything like it if there was not KOHA to start from. However because of the main issue of KOHA not supporting MARC nor having an easy way to incorporate Z39.50 (client as well as server) we started from scratch. However we are in constant touch with the KOHA people and are contributing back how we are doing MARC in the backend, how we are doing MARC editing, batch record uploading etc. Further the authority method implemented in KOHA does not accommodate the use of standard authority databases in the subject, name and tile fields. Further in our design effort we needed to consider issue like the ability to add-in XML data sources to accommodate local loaded databases of content and reference information. One of the key issues we are facing and you all to remember is that we are trying to build a ILS for small rural libraries in the US and the rest of the world, which may have multiple locations belong to the same system but no where close to what we all may have come to consider resembling an internet connection or for that matter a connection of some type between there locations. So we are doing much work on low bandwidth / sneaker net type database synchronization, ability to load local databases from multiple sources etc. (think about book mobiles and main library system... I won't draw the picture of possibilities, use your own imagination..) Further is should be understood that we FULLY support KOHA's efforts, but also all of us should understand that KOHA is written with a local important solution in mind, where we are looking at a broader picture. The following showed up on the koha list about a month ago: http://lists.katipo.co.nz/public/koha/2001/000252.html I very much hope those in both camps (if I'm reading the winds properly and there are indeed two camps) at least attempt to stay in sync w/r/to core issues such as data models and APIs. It looks like Steve from BC is putting a lot of work into MARC support within Koha, based apparently on Art's efforts with Pytheas, which is great to see. It would not be great to see that work and openbook totally diverge in areas such as this when they came from the same codebase. So for now I'll stand by my words about an ILS, and won't change them until we first see an open source SAP equivalent. It is in general no longer true, Steve is working hard on MARC support for koha as Daniel noted. And has also made lots of other changes to better suit koha to the libraries he is involved withs needs. Including a web based circulation, and a really tight circulation API. Which should make building circulation interfaces a doddle. So really what I would like to see is more communication between the Koha and OpenBook camps. Id really like to see them become much more similair to each other, so that the differences wont be in functionality, but in the chosen language to implement that functionality. Koha is perl, OpenBook is PHP. The more we can help each other the better the library system we end up with will be. The OpenBook people

Would the rest of you find it useful if I tried to get the OpenBook people (the Koha West team that added a bunch of features) to open their unreleased code to us... or add them into our repository as a forked project? I'd like to think that combining the two featuresets is probably our best bet long term, since it would get you Katipo/NZ guys and the Waitt Foundation group on the same page. Opinions? NSR

Okay, I've started working on making Debian packages of Koha. Since I'm a Debian user, that's my packaging system of choice. Alien should be able to make good rpm packages out of the deb packages. On to my ponderings: I've got the packages installing the following so far: /usr/share/koha/intranet/cgi-bin/koha/ (contains all the scripts) /usr/share/koha/intranet/htdocs (contains the intranet html and imgs) /usr/share/koha/opac/cgi-bin/koha/ /usr/share/koha/opac/htdocs/ /usr/lib/perl5/C4/ (Contains the C4 modules) /etc/koha.conf Still to be done: 1. Either create and populate, or update existing Koha mysql table. a. Initial population of the database may be tricky. I really think we need web-interfaces to more of the MySQL. Things like itemtypes, in particular, should be editable by the librarians directly. a. We need a system for updating the tables with new releases. Things like adding in new tables, or adding new fields to existing tables. I've handled this in the past by creating a version table that holds a version number for the table. The version number is the same as the koha release number. A script can then check the version number of the existing database and make all modifications necessary to bring the database up to date with the current release. (ie if installing v 1.5, and current database is v 1.2, make all necessary changes from 1.2 to 1.3, from 1.3 to 1.4, and from 1.4 to 1.5). 2. Set up the /etc/koha.conf configuration file with local settings. 3. Modify apache configuration files. This gets tricky. Obviously, the ip and servername need to be altered on a per-site basis. 2. The server has to have the aliased ips set up and ready to go. This requires modifying init files that I'm not comfortable doing even on Debian systems, much less any distribution generically. This will probably still have to be done manually. 3. The intranet virtual server needs authentication of one sort or another. I maintain accounts with a separate system that I developed called K12Admin which administers staff and student accounts for my entire district. These accounts are synced into the Koha member database and apache basic authentication files. I use basic authentication to authenticate the intranet virtual host and plan to do the same for giving members access to their library information. What are other people using?
