12 July, 2002 To the Koha community; Bonjour, Our first French translation did in fact come out last week, which sets the stage nicely for this weeks news. We've also seen continued growth of our developer and user bases (including an installation of FreeBSD -- Hooray!!) A continuing issue has been the verification and installation of all needed Perl modules for Koha. We've discussed different approaches to solving it, and it basically comes down to two approaches: 1) we could write all of our own functions and ignore existing Perl modules. This would allow us sidestep the problem entirely. The downside is that the modules are very well designed, and very well tested -- failing to use them takes more of our development time to duplicate their functionality *and* it introduces bugs that we would not ordinarily have to deal with. 2) we could use the modules and create a 'bundle' to use for installing them. This would allow us to leverage the work done by the module writers while still preserving a fairly simple installation method. It will require one of the developers to step up to maintaining the bundle itself though. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the matter. This is one of those cases where I think the users have a much better idea of what 'the right thing to do is', so please give it some thought and let us know. 1.2 With 1.2.1 out and in use Chris, Steve, and the other developers have wasted no time. If anything they've pick up the pace. There is already a release candidate for 1.2.2 (mostly bug fixes and small improvements). We've also seen early glimpses of 1.2.3 which features a templated version of the OPAC functionality. Our 1.2.3 release will be a big deal for Koha. Templates allow us to begin the process of translating the application. This opens Koha to a whole new world of users. Translations Nicholas has spearheaded the effort to organize the translation efforts. He's started a mailing list for translators (http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/koha-translate<> for details). He's also laid out some ground rules for translation (<http://www.saas.nsw.edu.au/wiki/index.php?page=TranslationTeams> and <http://lists.katipo.co.nz/public/koha/2002/000858.html> for details. If you'd like to see Koha to your native language, please get involved. Community More work has been going on in the larger community. Some of this work is now becoming visible at <http://www.callimachus.org>, which is an umbrella group for coordinating the efforts of people working on free software for libraries. Some initial joint projects are being bandied about and I think things will start to break loose fairly soon. I'd like to thank everyone for putting up with my disappearing act over the last couple of weeks. I'm currently in the midst of a job transition, which is impacting just about everything else as well. 1.2.3RC1

I found a bug in 1.2.3RC1. I put the configfile() routine in Koha.pm but Database.pm and Koha.pm both 'use' each other and that causes problems. If you move configfile to Database.pm it fixes the problem. I can't check in my change right now, but I thought I'd let you know. Steve

I've posted a release candidate for 1.2.3 on http://sourceforge.net/projects/koha/ This release will have the OPAC templating and Authentication systems added in, so it will likely need some extra testing before it goes out. The meeting is due to roll around in about an hour.... the collective-thinking idea seems to have taken a pratfall :) in not passing the agenda around in advance. As they say in legislatures, "necessarily absent" are Paul and Pat, former isn't feeling well, latter is occupied on something. I won't be at IRC meeting tonight (4AM for me ;-) ), because i'm ill. I don't think it's important. Hope to be OK tomorrow morning. I wanted to give some news about the MARC stuff : * The biblio.pm API is almost done i hope. What's missing is a proper way to manage additionalauthors and additionaltitles. I haven't tested complex combinations of biblio/bibitems/items too. I've done some tests, it seems the "OLD" koha is working still good (tests done with normal and acqui.simple). If you take a look at biblio.pm, you'll see how i've divided the problem in 4 types : old-DB, marc-DB, old-API, marc-API. Note old-API in CVS is supposed to use hashs as parameters, and it's A LOT EASIER for me... * Adding a biblio with the normal acquisition works fine, even in MARC-DB : it adds all what it does (except for addauth and addtit, of course) in the MARC-DB. * In acqui.simple, i've begun to rewrite the marcimport.pl to be compatible with the MARC-DB (structure of marc : it imports MARC-21 as well as UNIMARC, as well as USMARC, you just have to define correctly the parameters tables, and full recording of all MARC datas in the MARC-DB). It seems to work not bad in the ProcessFile part (it shows the "old-DB" fields and the MARC fields almost exactly as the 1.2 version did). I haven't begun to work on DB-add. Note that as i was rewriting the script, i use HTML::Template for outputs i create. Good meeting anyway for everybody. -- Paul

New branch

I've created a new CVS branch tagged koha-1_2_2 (both koha and koha-html modules are branched). This branch will be used exclusively for bug fixes before releasing 1.2.2. I'm now going to merge in my templating and authentication changes into the rel-1-2 which will become 1.2.3 when it's all ready. I will also merge these changes into the trunk. The main files affected are search.pl, detail.pl, moredetail.pl, memberentry.pl, moremember.pl, Search.pm. Also, the subjectsearch.pl script is no longer used. If this merge turns into a dismal failure, we can carry on with the koha-1_2_2 branch while I lick my wounds. :) Comments? Steve.

(Pre)Meeting Notes

In the interests of expediting the meeting, I thought I'd summarize some stuff, and just take questions/ideas later... -------------Translations------------- We have a mail list for translators: koha-translate(a)lists.sourceforge.net (clever name, eh?). I'll be sending announcements of new versions, etc in need of translation on that list. My immediate target is the installation section of the manual and the actual application stuff... My hope is to get (we have a bunch of potential languages floating around as possibles) a system going: application+install -> manual+website (hosted at CountryCode.koha.org) -> template+'maintenance' translation At the moment, I'm asking that we only consider supporting languages with at least two (active, willing) people on http://www.saas.nsw.edu.au/wiki/index.php?page=TranslationTeams, which has a list of anyone interested in doing translation effort. If you know someone interested in a language, and they aren't on that list -- I don't know about them! PleasePleasePlease put them on that list... thanks. The 2 person guideline is taken from Apache, and I'd prefer -- for credibility reasons, and support/upgrade reasons as Koha evolves -- to not support anything without two people interested. At the moment: There is a fr.koha.org (thanks to Paul) getting underway. Italian is probably our next candidate for a CountryCode.koha.org. -------------Documentation------------- Rosalie (who has also been our Peerless Proofreader for the first version of the manual) is producing fabulous stuff for the next version of the manual, which will hopefully include the Librarian's manual. Look for that to hit the website real/soon/now :). Also, as soon as that is done, I'll probably be cleaning up some of what we have formatting, etc wise. I expect to have some case study information being collected soon (more to come on that). Lastly, I'd like to clean up the wiki soon -- any comments? I'd also like to try again to do a features/version list since we've shaken things up with the early arrival of some things. -------------Community------------- Pat has done a fabulous job of getting notices out to places like http://www.usrlib.info and http://www.oss4lib.org. We also have members involved in the umbrella group/project the Callimachus Group (http://www.callimachus.org) which I'm helping organize to promote some shared effort in regards to things like conferences.
