19 July, 2002 To the Koha community; Bon Dia, Well, I've heard a little bit of feedback on modules, and it seems that most of you are leaning toward the idea of using more existing Perl modules and needing fewer Koha specific functions. If you still want to toss in your thoughts, please do -- we need to come to closure on this pretty soon though, so don't delay. I'd still like to hear from people who are using Koha. If you've got a success story (or non-success story), please send it to me (<kaitiaki(a)koha.org>). I'd like to be able to use some of your stories to help publicize Koha. (And if you've had problems, perhaps we can find a way to fix them.) To help get a bit more data about Koha users (how many of you are there, where are you located, etc). We're starting to put together a survey. It will be hosted on the web, and I'll be sure to announce it here. Documentation The librarian specific manual has been written (thanks to Rosalie and her band of merry librarians). Nick has given it a first review, and it is now in the hands of another reviewer (Brig McCoy, who's a new contributor). With this, the manual is basically complete. It's not done though. Look for more information to be included as we go along. If you think we've missed something in our efforts so far, please lend a hand. Translations The French translations are continuing apace. The manual has gone through a first draft and is being reviewed. The French Koha website is nearing completion, and the 'From the Kaitiaki' notes are being translated regularly. A second librarian has contacted me about a Spanish translation. Cristian and Enrique have been meeting together and have volunteered to start translating Koha and providing support to Latin American (especially Chilean) libraries interested in using Koha. Let's wish them well. Community One of the most exciting things happening in the world of Koha is the increasing amount of visibility we're getting. I've recently had email from New Zealand and New Caladonea about articles being written about Koha. I've heard from people interested in seeing Koha translated into Arabic. We've also seen some evidence that Koha is now in use on five continents. We're also starting to get some notice outside the library world, most recently we were mentioned in the Linux Weekly News (in their 'Development Section'). Wow! The future is looking bright. Minor item & Manual News

I've taken the (hopefully minor :) ) liberty of tidying up the wiki... mainly just shuffling on the main page, etc around for a little more rationality. Nothing has been unlinked.... I promise!, just moved. I just wanted a little order from the chaos before we start on the 1.3/1.4 series. The manual is now blessed with Rosa's fabulous librarian section... (thankyouthankyouthankyou Rosa, and all the other contributors on this list -- I think I can now safely say we're at a Full Manual stage! I intend to add more, of course, but this is much much more complete). In obedience to my usual rule of thumb, I have someone besides me and Rosa (who we also owe a huge thankyou for her earlier proofreading efforts) proofing the librarian's section, more pro forma than anything else as Rosa's text is pretty slick as it is. Our fearless proofer is a new contributor, Brig McCoy, from the Linda Hall Library of Science in Missouri, who some of you may have seen on the user-list. The (pre Librarian section) version has been translated into French, and the (pre proof) current version is in our fabulous Franco-phone team's hands. It isn't ready for playing that role yet though. The biggest things that need to be done are: 1) translation of the documentation into Spanish. We currently have one volunteer to work on this (a librarian from Chile), unfortunately he hasn't been heard from since his initial offer. There are two kinds of documentation that require translation; librarian oriented and support/IT oriented. These will require slightly different skills of the translators. I'm hoping to work with the Callimachus Group, <http://www.callimachus.org>, to write a grant request to hire a couple of translators to perform this work for us. 2) a templated version of the OPAC (Patron) and CIRC (Librarian) systems needs to be completed. We hope to have this work done within the month. Another group is already working with pre-release versions to do a translation into French. (They are actually working with some of our french developers, so this is quite a boon for us.) I'm a volunteer (as are most of the people working on the Koha project), but would be happy to help make Koha work for your needs. I think this can be done without a great deal of effort. A gentleman from Nigeria is currently working to install Koha for his local library and things are proceeding nicely, so there seems to be some momentum building. > > I wish you success with your project! installer error: Please enter the port for your Intranet/Librarian interface. Enter intranet port [8080]: Use of uninitialized value in concatenation (.) or string at installer.pl line 430, <STDIN> line 13 (#1) (W uninitialized) An undefined value was used as if it were already defined. It was interpreted as a "" or a 0, but maybe it was a mistake. To suppress this warning assign a defined value to your variables. To help you figure out what was undefined, perl tells you what operation you used the undefined value in. Note, however, that perl optimizes your program and the operation displayed in the warning may not necessarily appear literally in your program. For example, "that $foo" is usually optimized into "that " . $foo, and the warning will refer to the concatenation (.) operator, even though there is no . in your program. --- Ville Huhtala
