Hi All -- Greetings from ByWater Solutions! I hope everyone had a great weekend and mother’s day. I love the passion I have seen on this post over the past few days. Although we are relatively new in the community we are completely dedicated to Koha and wanted to weigh in on the conversation. In regards to the pay-for-support listing page; I vote that the companies be listed by location, which can either be implemented by a linkable map or just listed by region. However, I also truly believe that this should not be solely decided by the vendors and developers of Koha, but by the users as well. They are the ones whom are going through the arduous task of deciding which company, if any, to choose to lead them through the task of migrating to a new ILS. Another reason for this belief is that as per human nature, whomever controls that page will have self (company)- interest in mind, whether intended or not. I also have a question about the Koha-manage list. What are the qualifications to be on this list? I've sent several requests to join, to no avail, and I have never received an answer as to why? My company is listed as a pay-for-support option and we are heavily invested in supporting the community. To me, having exclusivity to a list where many of the decisions being made for the community are done seems against the whole community/ open-source ideal. For example, the discussion of how to list the pay-for-support companies was completed and decided on that chain and then changed on the community koha.org website. The escalation surrounding this issue may have been prevented if all of the members in the community, some of whom this directly affected, were allowed to be part of the discussion. I think many of us in the Koha community will be interested to see if any of these discussions, suggestions and ideas actually yield any results. As of right now it seems to be self-serving, as we have yet to see any changes. Every community feels growing pains when it comes to evolution and change, but only the successful ones foster open discussion, hold each member in esteem, and have leaders who can chose the path of humility when change is needed. I sincerely hope we can take that path and look back at the issues we have now, and will have in the future, as inevitable speed bumps on the road to success. ByWater Solutions has not yet had the opportunity to contribute major developments or groundbreaking answers to problems in the community, but I hope my comments will still be taken seriously regardless. sessions in mysql

So we have been having a few issues with locking up servers so I've been watching show processlist when this happens and it seems that we have a lot of REPLACE INTO sessions(id, a-session) etc.. lines when this happens and when they magically go away everything is running smoothly again. So what are these "sessions" and how do they play with the system? If you show columns from sessions you get to columns: +-----------+-------------+------+-----+---------+-------+ | Field | Type | Null | Key | Default | Extra | +-----------+-------------+------+-----+---------+-------+ | id | varchar(32) | NO | PRI | | | | a_session | text | NO | | | | +-----------+-------------+------+-----+---------+-------+ If I do a select count(*) from sessions I get select count(*) from sessions; ERROR 1053 (08S01): Server shutdown in progress but thankfully the server doesn't actually shutdown! TIPS hints??? usually by the time I contact my support group about it and they get connected 30 minutes to an hour later things are better. Lately if it hangs it is only for 10-15 minutes but at that the librarians are pulling their hair out with 30-40 8 year olds trying to search for a book/check in or out a book!! Problem in installation of Koha

AJAX frameworks

Currently, Koha has three possible frameworks for AJAX: - Biblios, XML-based: Already in use, though only by Biblios. No wrapper, so each of the services has to deal with XML::Simple itself. XML works fairly well, though is slightly more work to deal with than JSON on the browser end. - Tags, JSON-based: This creates JSON objects through interpolation of strings. This works, and avoids the CPAN/JSON dependency, but is error prone, and wouldn't work well for a large number of scripts. - C4::Service (recently sent to patches list, so everything dealing with it is uncertain): I am slightly biased towards this approach because I wrote it, but I think it saves a lot of repetitive work in writing AJAX services. It requires its own script, unlike the approach used for the tags script, which has the disadvantage of requiring some duplicative coding, but this was not too horrible a problem even when writing AJAX circulation. C4::Service was originally part of the AJAX circulation patchset, but this is still in testing, so I decided to send it on its own. It comes with a HTML::Template-ish wrapper around CPAN's JSON module. It might be worth deciding on one or a blend of these approaches, as AJAX will continue to be important. -- Jesse Weaver

Intranet password

Hello, i just installed Koha and went into intranet to get to the librarian interface however i can't login and i don't remember Koha asking me for a password or user name. What should i do? I installed koha 2.2.9 for windows. Kind regards, Linh

Announcing ... New koha.org Website based on Plone

Hi all, We're pleased to announce that we've nearly finished migrating koha.org from Kea to the Plone Content Management System--the new site should be ready to launch by the end of this week. The new website, based on the Plone Content Management System, provides a number of advantages over the old website: 1. User Management -- anyone can sign up and add content to koha.org through the built-in review process. When you create an account and log in, you can begin adding content to koha.org (NOTE: your content will not display on the site until it has been approved by a moderator). Here are some examples of content you can add: * a new library listing on the Showcase page to make your library show up on the map * new Koha event from Events * new Koha news item from News * new documentation in the Documentation area 2. Built-in Translation Facilities -- Plone supports multi-language content as well as a translation interface, which will let us provide information about Koha in more languages, right from koha.org. If you want koha.org available in your language or would like to volunteer to translate koha.org, please send a request to the koha-translate list and we'll make sure to enable that language in the interface and set your account up to enable translations. 3. Documentation Center -- we've imported the Koha 3.0 and 3.2 Manuals, as well as added a host of other documentation types, such as How-tos, Tutorials, FAQ, etc., and anyone can contribute to the documentation through the built-in review process outlined above. NOTE: LibLime will discontinue updates to the Koha Manual from the old liblime domain location, all new Manual updates will be added to the new koha.org site. 4. Showcase section -- highlights Koha users throughout the world utilizing a world map, anyone can add their library using a simple form 5. News and Events -- can now be submitted for approval by any user. We'll be updating the DNS this weekend to launch the website and will alert these lists when the process is complete (the old website will continue to be available at http://old.koha.org) In the meantime, you can check out the new site at http://new.koha.org Many thanks to Tina Burger, Nicole Engard and Clay Fouts for their efforts getting this new site ready, and to Paul Poulain for excellent feedback of our first draft. Number of renewals per Patron Types

Hi there, I'd like to have a number of renewals based on the patron type. For exemple, a student can renew a book 5 times while a teacher can renew it 8 times. I don't think this is currently available in Koha. I see this as a new column in the Circulation & Fines rules. Any suggestion or comment about this? Eric

New site redirections

Thanks for the list. That is helpful. I've added all of the new/old mappings except for the sitemap itself. Since it's not a Plone content page, the aliasing tool can't insert itself into the content resolution scheme. Of the list of pages missing from the sitemap, I found obvious links only for the downloads, OPAC showcase, and NPL pages. I'm not particularly familiar with the site's contents, so perhaps someone else can determine the appropriate mapping for the remaining pages. I'm not on the koha users' list, so I'm not going to know about any responses on there unless they're also forwarded to this list or directly to me. Please feel welcome to do so.
