Here comes along a french email relating a new document on Koha installation on Gentoo Distribution and gives a link onto a page which compares Koha to some Open-Source Softwares and gives it quite a good mark. Translation of the email follow : Hi, I am writing this little e-mail to announce the publication of a documentation on Koha (Install, Setup, and use under Linux Gentoo) on http://logiciels.bib.free.fr website (Koha page) This doc was written during my training period in LabSAD, a research lab at Pierre Mendes France University in Grenoble. My work there was to introduce Koha into the library. Documentation is primarily devoted to laboratory members but I had it published in case ot other could be interested. UNIMARC as a cataloguing format in France : 64th IFLA General Conference. IFLA, 1998, http://www.ifla.org/IV/ifla64/111-161e.htm . Recommendation 995 is not an IFLA standard but as long as it is supported as a standard for French public libraries that is fine. My concern was adhering to a recognised standard. Preferably a simple one at first. Recommendation 995 does not seem to offer a means for machine parsing of holdings enumeration for serials. On that account and a few others, it has strong disadvantages for academic libraries. Machine parsing of serials holdings is very important for reducing the administrative burden of OpenURL link resolvers. I expect that the UNIMARC holdings format is too new to have many adopters yet. Although OCLC will be adopting the MARC21 holdings format this autumn, much of what is useful in the holdings format already has a place in MARC bibliographic. The Koha MARC21 framework is missing some of the most helpful fields for enumerating serials holdings in a machine parsable manner. This is correctable by the user and may be most significantly a problem for most easily administering OpenURL link resolvers. I have asked on other lists about how standard implementations address this authority control problem for MARC21 bibliographic and I am awaiting any answers. Unfortunately, my recent posts to the MARC list seems to have fallen into the moderator's black hole. There is a recent discussion on the MARC list with the usual negative answer about the recurring question of MARC in relational databases. A similar negative view has been expressed about XML really offering a way around the problem. There is a mention how existing systems represent MARC data from the ever well informed and insightful Karen Coyle. Zebra Searching

Hi everyone, In case you haven't been following the IRC logs we've been discussing Zebra as a potential searching engine. From Indexdata's website: Zebra is a high-performance, general-purpose structured text indexing and retrieval engine. It reads structured records in a variety of input formats (eg. email, XML, MARC) and allows access to them through exact boolean search expressions and relevance-ranked free-text queries. Zebra supports large databases (more than ten gigabytes of data, tens of millions of records). It supports incremental, safe database updates on live systems. You can access data stored in Zebra using a variety of Index Data tools (eg. YAZ and PHP/YAZ) as well as commercial and freeware Z39.50 clients and toolkits. http://indexdata.dk/zebra I've setup a zebra test site running on LibLime's server. It currently has access to three Zebra datasets, Nelsonville's 150K records, LibLime's 5 million records (recently donated by sanspach), and Paul Poulain's 13K records. (Paul is still working out some issues with indexing unimarc records so stay tuned for that one to work). http://liblime.com/zap/advanced.html Note that the search and retrieval is done via the Z39.50 protocol with the server that ships with Zebra and both the index and the server can be customized based on the kinds of searches you want to perform (the above site is just a proof of concept) -- we'd have support for relevence ranking, stemming, the whole gambit of searching technologies. In all my tests searches are returned in under a second. If we decide to work with Zebra we will need to decide what to do with non-marc libraries. Should we develop an export utility that will allow Zebra to index the records (in say, XML format)? Should we use the Koha tables to create a basic MARC record for use with Zebra? Should we leave the Koha 1.x searching methods unchanged and only use Zebra for MARC libraries? Also, what should we do with the existing marc_*_table tables? What have the koha developers added to 2.3 this week? hdl added branch selection and filter for budgets and funds. hellen updated default/de templates joshferraro added a way for patrons to view their reading record from their account, moved branches and branchcodes into a TMPL_LOOP, sorted the branches alphabetically and ported some reservation code from 2.2 oleonard ported some npl template changes from 2.2, updated to support joshferraro's changes, added purchase links to search results, fixed bugs.
