an experiment

With the call going out for people to advertise their own businesses on the koha support pages (thanks for the support Rach!), I wanted to set up a mailing list for people to discuss starting companies and/or consulting practices around Koha. This list will be a place to discuss marketing, business development, resource sharing, lead sharing (for extra-regional leads), sub-contracting opportunities, and the like. I believe that there is room for a lot of healthy cooperation, and would like to take some of the load off of Katipo. I also believe that koha and koha-devel are the wrong places for this conversation. okay, okay, i give. ;) It doesn look like the e-smith package does provide a lot of functionality, and could be a great choice for a library installing koha on their own. Because the various developers (and companies) each like different flavors (or flavours) of linux (and other unixen), we're not likely to settle on a specific distribution. All is not lost though, there are several options: Someone with enough interest could build packages themselves. Someone could start a company to sell an 'after market kit' for e-smith. Someone could contact e-smith and talk with them about adding koha into their current offering. Someone could hire an existing koha support company to build the packages and provide support for them. I think that any of these is a pretty good option. As the Kaitiaki I'd certainly encourage someone to take on any one of them, and would be willing to help, advise, and otherwise support them. As an individual, I'm not likely to take on the project (on my dime at least) for a couple of reasons: RedHat is the acknowledged (US) market leader ... I can ride that brand to higher sales. (cf. Networking shops selling Cisco gear) SME may prove to be a viable extension to this, but not as a first cut (imco) As a second platform I want to see Koha working on OpenBSD. I think this is the best choice for a secure server. It will also help show that Koha isn't 'for linux only'. Let me know what you'd like to do, -pate

Couple of nasty bugs in 1.2.0

Hi guys I was thinking due to the 3 nasty bugs in 1.2.0 which have now been fixed. That it might be good to get a 1.2.1 bug fix release out promptly. I could tar up a 1.2.1 release candidate in the next day or so. Bugs that im aware of installer.pl set a wrong variable in koha.conf -- fixed (thanks mike) missing table definitions in koha.mysql and/or updatedatabase -- fixed errors in the admin scripts -- fixing now Any I have missed? Koha 1.2.0 Released

Its finally here! Nearly a year since the last release, we have a new stable release of koha. 1.2.0 The main new features in this version are: - Can search by dewey number - Keyword Searches can be restricted by a dewey number - Can restrict a catalogue search by a class of items - Simple acquisitions module - Deleting borrowers checks their accounts for reserves, current issues, and fines - New catalogue maintenance section - MARC importing from a file, and from z39.50 Main Bugfixes: - Keyword searches are a lot faster - Combined author and title search is now also searching series title - Combined author and title search is now also searching series title - Adding children and institutions works as advertised There have been numerous little fixes and a lot of code clean up. The structure of the tarball has changed to a more sensible layout, and the INSTALL document has been rewritten. There is also now a installer script, as well as a functioning database update script. All this should mean its the easiest Koha to install or upgrade yet. The next release wont take nearly as long, 1.2.1 is well underway.
