ALA Meeting in Washington DC

Seems like only yesterday people were gathering in Boston! If we don't act now we won't be gathering! ALA is in Washington DC June 25-29. I would love to get together with some of you if possible to talk about KUDOS and any other topic that might be relevant. You don't have to be a customer of a particular vendor just show up. First things first we are looking for a place and time to meet! It would be best if we could meet on Sunday or Monday if possible. Does anyone have connections with the DC public Library? I see the main branch is near by, but all of the rooms are booked... hmmm wonder why... Otherwise we could meet at a restaurant or where ever to at least have some together time face to face. Looking forward to hearing from everyone! I actually will get to go to ALA meetings now as I am part of the AASL affiliate assembly!! Thanks! Debian packages of Koha: current status and plans

For a few weeks now I have been working on and off getting Koha packaged for Debian. Here are my thoughts and plans. To start with, I am targeting Koha 3.2 for Debian squeeze. Neither is released yet, but both will hopefully release in a few weeks or months, respectively. The reason I am targeting those is that when I find things that need fixing, it is probably easier to fix them in a development version than a released version. There were five CPAN modules missing from Debian squeeze that Koha needs. I have made Debian packages from them, and they are currently in Debian unstable. Unless there are problems, they should get into Debian squeeze in a week or two, and hopefully will be part of the actual Debian release. If any further software Koha needs, but is missing from Debian, I'll see about getting that packaged and uploaded as well. CPAN modules are mostly very easy. My near-term goals are as follows: * Get something usable out there soonish. It does not have to be perfect and final, just needs to work. I will make some opnionated choices, to keep things simpler for packaging. For example, Zebra will be required. More flexibility can come later after the basic packages work well and have been tested in various scenarios. * The koha package is meant for someone who wants to set up Koha for themselves. Installing the package will set up a host for one instance of Koha. The package will take care of dependencies, set up the databases, cron jobs, start Zebra, and do everything else to make Koha just work. Actual configuration of Koha will happen via the browser, on the first login to the intranet page, as if Koha had been installed from source. * Those who want to set up a host for multiple Koha instances can install the koha-common package instead. That package does not create any Koha instances , but contains scripts that will create, remove, enable, disable, dump, and restore Koha instances. There can be any number of Koha instances on the same host, and each instance will be independent of each other. * Set up a Debian apt repository at debian.koha-community.org to serve the Koha Debian packages. Koha is a large project and it will take a bit of effort to get it ready for inclusion into Debian, so the new repository will be helpful to those wanting to install Koha on their Debian machines. As a quick example, what I want to achieve is this: if you want to install Koha on your server, do this: apt-get install koha If, on the other hand, you want to host several Koha instances on the same server, do this instead: apt-get install koha-common koha-create --name=kotkahs --description='Kotka High School' \ --domain=kotkahs.example.com --defaults=highschool This will set up a new Koha instance, including databases, etc. It will create a new superlibrarian user, and populate the database with some sample content. The sample content will take care of the initial setup questions that Koha normally asks on the first intranet login. Instead, the instance will be immediately ready to use. In either scenario, it will be possible to enable/disable the Koha instance, for example during system maintenance. koha-disable kotkahs apt-get upgrade koha-enable kotkahs Further, it will be possible to do a dump of an instance, and later restore the instance from the dump, possibly even on a different machine. The dump will contain both the database and all configuration files. koha-disable kotkahs koha-dump kotkahs koha-remove kotkahs scp /var/spool/koha/kotkahs/* newhost.example.com: ssh newhost.example.com koha-restore kotkahs-* koha-enable kotkahs The dumps will be useful as backups as well. I've implemented most of that, although in a quick-and-dirty manner. I'm working on polishing things now, but before I go much further, I thought I'd notify everyone and ask the big questions... Is this something others would find useful? Am I missing something that would be useful to many? I am not currently looking for test users or patches, but I will announce when I have something that I think is reasonably safe for others to try.

Testing XML parsers

[Moving to the more topical koha-devel] For a bit of anecdotal evidence, we've been testing with the non-Parser version for over six months with no ill effects. However, I definitely encourage further, more rigorous compatibility tests before making a recommendation. How do we go about testing that formally? Also, even though $KOHA_CONF is parsed in each and every script, the time for a single snarfing of that file is immaterial compared to that required for parsing the 20 or so MARCXML records and corresponding XSLT templates that pop up in single OPAC search results page. Patron cannot checking out

Hi, we are using Koha-3.0.5. We are facing a problem for those patrons who had outstanding fines. After completing the fine, he/she cannot issue any book. I mean, after entering the barcode of the book, there is no confirmation window coming!!! I cannot see any window like: "Please Confirm Checkout"!!! In systempref, "noissuescharge" is set to 5. Bulk Marc Import via the Web

Hi all I am discussing the possibility of wrapping the bulkmarcimport.pl script in a web page with Bob Birchall. The page would offer a form that contains the command line options as checkboxes or textboxes as appopriate along with a file input control to upload a .MRC file. Upon completion of the form, the web page validates the .MRC as far as that is possible (hints anyone?) and then passes it on to bulkmarcimport.pl. The output from the script is captured and sent back to the the web user. Seems simple enough. The only problem I imagine encountering is the web browser timing out for an import that takes a long time. Some CPAN modules Koha needs in Debian now

This might be a nice small bit of good news to start the week. Debian squeeze has most of the CPAN modules Koha needs, but five were missing. I made packages for them and got them uploaded into Debian. They last of them has just this weekend gotten through the NEW queue, which is where new Debian packages wait for the Debian ftp-master to check them. Right now, all five packages are only in Debian unstable (a.k.a. sid), but if there are no bugs found, they should land in Debian squeeze in about ten days, I hope. If you wish, you can check their current status in Debian via the following page: http://qa.debian.org/developer.php?login=lars% 40catalyst.net.nz&comaint=yes When it lists a version for "Testing", then the package is in squeeze (squeeze being the current development/testing version of Debian). There is a reasonable chance that Koha will install and work on Debian squeeze out of the box, without any additional software to be installed. Note that I do not yet know if everything required to actually run all parts of Koha are there yet, but Koha does pass the automatic test suite with these packages installed.

Modifying biblio data with SQL

Hi all, We wish to make some minor tweaks to biblio data that was imported originally using bulkmarcimport.pl. I understand where the data resides in the biblio,biblioitems,items table trio and can do the fix with some SQL. My question regards the other place the data is stored, i.e. in the marcxml field in the bibioitems table. Should I make the same changes to the marcxml data that I make in the table trio? git.koha-community.org hosting

Hello All - I've recently realized that there isn't a git.koha-community.org site for hosting code. I'm am proposing that ByWater Solutions provide server space for hosting a git repo with an address of git.koha-community.org The main control and configuration will be managed by the koha-community.org Release Managers, Release Maintainers, and Translation Managers and anybody else designated to push patches. We will gladly take all help and recommendations for configuration, appropriate security, and access rights for all involved. The manner in which we plan on hosting git - is access for all. All those interested in helping please contact myself or Ian Walls ( ian.walls(a)bywatersolutions.com ) and of course please make sure to post comments here in the mail-list so that we can all follow along. I myself failed to install koha on Centos 5. it came with a libxml library that was incompatible with the libXML perl module. And downgrading would of been a headache.
