Hey gang, I recently had a heck of a time working with Savannah's CVS to get it to allow me to revert a version of a file to a previous one. New Koha Languages Module

Hi gang, On IRC today, hdl, paul and I discussed how we represent lists of languages in Koha. At the moment we have three places where lists are represented, and all three use a different method of obtaining the list: 1. language switcher for OPAC and Intranet, and directory names for the language options (use two letter codes based on the ISO 639-1 standard ). 2. search interface (limiting by langauge like on: http://search.athenscounty.lib.oh.us/search?expanded_options=1 ( use three letter codes based on ISO 639-2, language names in the language's script, and English langauge names all hardcoded in Koha.pm). 3. hdl's new web installer, where the librarian picks her language as a step in the install process (uses two letter codes based on ISO 639-1, hardcoded). There are other places where lists of langauges will need to be represented shortly (on that I can think of off the top of my head is the new translation site that is currently in beta). I'd like to propose that we create a new Language.pm module for managing the list of languages with the aim to provide the following elements for every list of langauges: 1. two or three letter codes for the language based on ISO 639-2, which is maintained by the LOC and is inclusive of ISO 639-1: http://www.loc.gov/standards/iso639-2/ http://www.loc.gov/marc/languages/ 2. the language name in the script of the language. So for instance, 中文 for Chinese, Français for French, etc. 3. the langauge name in the language of the user, based on the template language choice ( so that if you are logged in as a French speaker, you'd see Perse (French spelling), not Persian (English spelling). To acomplish this, I propose we create a Language.pm module in Koha that provides a set of functions for finding lists in various contexts. We could utilize the existing lists around ISO-630-2 to create the initial list, perhaps stored as a flat file, or in SQL ... and we will need to create a new language_list.tmpl file to store language name translations (at least some of which can probably be automated using available translations). So, ideas, questions? Namespace Change: C4 -> Koha

Hi all, Just a crazy thought I had: $ cd cvsrepos/rel_3_0/koha $ perl -p -i -e 's/C4/Koha/g' `grep -ril C4 *.pm` $ perl -p -i -e 's/C4/Koha/g' `grep -ril C4 *.pl` $ perl -p -i -e 's/C4/Koha/g' `grep -ril C4 *.tmpl` $ cvs commit -m "renaming namespace from C4 to Koha" The above commands should replace our entire module namespace from C4 to Koha, which is arguably more intuitive. Thoughts? Languages.pm module in rel_3_0

Hi all, I just had a crack at a first draft of the new Languages.pm module, which provides functions for getting lists of languages. It's well documented, so perldoc is your friend. Please try it out and if you find it useful, incorporate it whenever you need to get a list of languages. Koha Documentation

Hi all, I've given some thought to the current state of Koha documentation. We currently have the following documentation: 1. Koha Intranet help (built in [?] at top right of interface), not complete, not well maintained. At dev week, we discussed using the wiki as a means of updating the onlinehelp for the Intranet (point #3 above), any progress on that front? Do we have a script to convert wiki -> templates ? Do we all still feel that's the best way to improve the online help? 2. wiki.koha.org, easy to edit (when working), not very authoritative, not well organized. I think the wiki is always going to be a great resource for developers, but probably not the best for users. 3. kohadocs.org, somewhat authoritative, but slow to update, and only a few people with the know-how to use Freemind to generate the XML, etc. In looking around at other projects' User's Guides, one that stands out in my mind as having the ideal features is MySQL: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/ I'll try to summarize what I like about their Manual help: 1. each page has a version attached to it, so you can be looking at docs for Disaster Recovery for version 5.0: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/disaster-prevention.html And you can click on '4.1' to see that page as it applies for version 4.1. 2. Users can add comments to ask questions or add additional info to the bottom of each page: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/4.1/en/backup-recovery.html 3. There is a MySQL print manual, which I assume is generated from their online documentation (I could be wrong though). Having a print version of the manual is a huge advantage. The one thing missing from the MySQL manual is a way to translate pages. At LibLime, we run our website off of Plone (http://plone.org) which I think would allow us to do at least some of the nice things that MySQL can do, along with allowing for translation of each page. Before I invest too much time investigating what would be involved in customizing Plone for Koha's documentation, does anyone have any other ideas for how a new User's Guide should be structured, or what software would be good to try? koha 2.2.8 (previously 2.2.7-1) release plan

Hello all, toins has created a R_2-2-7-1 branch from 2.2.7, and ported all BUGFIXES since 2.2.7 release. That will do the 2.2.8 (we talked of 2.2.7.1 during our last chat, but thinking of this, I think it's unclear for users : the next version should be called 2.2.8 and the next one 2.2.9. joshua agreed with this idea) I gave it some tests, and it seems to work fine. I install it atm for a new french koha user that i'll teach koha later this week. If everything is as smooth as expected, i'll release 2.2.8 on monday/tuesday next week (it may be delayed as baby birth is expected for wednesday, so if you don't hear from me on time, you'll know why ;-) ) NOTE FOR TRANSLATORS : there are only 1 new string and 2 updated strings between 2.2.7 and 2.2.8, so 2.2.7 translations should work for 2.2.8 as well.
