Hi everyone, Just a quick request regarding commits to Koha. Please make sure that whatever you're committing at least compiles. It's fine if it doesn't work exactly like it should -- but it should at least compile ;-). This goes for all commits -- even those to HEAD (2.3). Zebra Searching

Hi everyone, In case you haven't been following the IRC logs we've been discussing Zebra as a potential searching engine. From Indexdata's website: Zebra is a high-performance, general-purpose structured text indexing and retrieval engine. It reads structured records in a variety of input formats (eg. email, XML, MARC) and allows access to them through exact boolean search expressions and relevance-ranked free-text queries. Zebra supports large databases (more than ten gigabytes of data, tens of millions of records). It supports incremental, safe database updates on live systems. You can access data stored in Zebra using a variety of Index Data tools (eg. YAZ and PHP/YAZ) as well as commercial and freeware Z39.50 clients and toolkits. http://indexdata.dk/zebra I've setup a zebra test site running on LibLime's server. It currently has access to three Zebra datasets, Nelsonville's 150K records, LibLime's 5 million records (recently donated by sanspach), and Paul Poulain's 13K records. (Paul is still working out some issues with indexing unimarc records so stay tuned for that one to work). http://liblime.com/zap/advanced.html Note that the search and retrieval is done via the Z39.50 protocol with the server that ships with Zebra and both the index and the server can be customized based on the kinds of searches you want to perform (the above site is just a proof of concept) -- we'd have support for relevence ranking, stemming, the whole gambit of searching technologies. In all my tests searches are returned in under a second. If we decide to work with Zebra we will need to decide what to do with non-marc libraries. Should we develop an export utility that will allow Zebra to index the records (in say, XML format)? Should we use the Koha tables to create a basic MARC record for use with Zebra? Should we leave the Koha 1.x searching methods unchanged and only use Zebra for MARC libraries? Also, what should we do with the existing marc_*_table tables? What have the koha developers added to 2.3 this week? hdl added branch selection and filter for budgets and funds. hellen updated default/de templates joshferraro added a way for patrons to view their reading record from their account, moved branches and branchcodes into a TMPL_LOOP, sorted the branches alphabetically and ported some reservation code from 2.2 oleonard ported some npl template changes from 2.2, updated to support joshferraro's changes, added purchase links to search results, fixed bugs. 1. General structure + We will split configure, build and install stages. + We will investigate ExtUtils::MakeMaker and may use it. + This should make packaging and porting easier. ( Ultimately, Bundle::Koha may return. ) 2. auto-install - This function will go away, replaced by configure flags. ( There could be a wrapper for configure if wanted. ) 3. L10N - With the move away from Q&A, this is less important. 4. PostgreSQL support + This is not seen as a major problem for the installer. Meeting was held at 21:00 +0000. Koha -> Zebra Integration Mailing List

Hi everyone, As you probably know, in the next version of Koha we will be changing the underlying MARC data scheme and retrieval method from a SQL-based system to a textual scheme using Zebra (http://indexdata.dk/zebra) as the main indexing and retrieval engine. Needless to say, moving to Zebra will be a bit step for Koha. To better facilitate the move I've created a new list: koha-zebra. My plan is that this will be a temporary list for the key folks involved in the transition. So if you have a vested interest in Koha's move to Zebra or if you'd like to be involved in the process feel free to join the list -- but please keep on topic: http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/koha-zebra I'll give folks a chance to sign up, etc. and will send out an introductory email later today on the koha-zebra list with a summary of our Koha->Zebra discussions thusfar as well as a brief outline of current roles and where we're at with the integration. If you'd like to get involved in the process (we will need sponsors, programmers, doc writers, and technical advisors) drop me an email and we can discuss where you'd like to fit in. What has been added to koha 2.3 this week? Here's a list: rangi helped the scripts feed the right things to templates and fixed a bug from the 2.2->2.3 merge. oleonard updated the NPL OPAC and Intranet templates. joshferraro added a way to display ToC and Descriptions. hellen updated the default/de intranet templates. hdl added choice lists for sorting biblios and patrons added some help screens expanded the subscription display added support for dashed ISBN ported some changes between 2.2 and 2.3 and fixed some bugs genjimoto extended the css/en templates with sidebars and changed the opac-detail authorwords display A fuller changelog is http://www.ttllp.co.uk/koha/20050704.changelog for a few weeks, or see cvs log. -- MJ Ray (slef), K. I think Tümer makes a very good point here. I would hate to adopt zebra and then lose the entire Windows market! It seems to me we should address this concern before we discuss Paul's (excellent!) plan for adopting zebra. Having said that, I am going to make a comment about Paul's (excellent!) plan for adopting zebra. :D The biggest problem IMHO with the current MARC editor is the l-o-n-g time it takes to process a record. An external MARC editor may help, but couldn't we also convert the internal MARC editor so it processes new records in batches? (I think modification of records could still be done in real time.) The editor could build an iso2709 file containing several records, instead of just one record, and then use something like bulkmarcimport to load them.
