RFC: Common base for Koha table operations

Koha's DB interfacing in C4 is very procedural and full of repetitive code for basic table operations. We haven't enforced a strict naming convention, or an argument style, so the result is predictably confusing. The arguments are frequently recognized by position, so you have to remember which is which, and how many, like: GetItem(undef,$barcode) GetItem($itemnumber,undef,1) C4::Table manipulates table data in a completely OO way, with the same argument style regardless of which table is being accessed. There is no reason that we should have to code a new Get_XXX_by_YYY function or add a new positional argument to existing Get_XXX functions every time we want to be able to query efficiently against a given field. We should be able to do that from the start. For example: use C4::Table; my $table = C4::Table->new('items'); my $set1 = $table->select({barcode => $barcode}); my $set2 = $table->select({itemnumber => $itemnumber}); Please note that this is not designed as a substitute for true DBI abstraction (like DBIx::Class) or other more sophisticated OO layers. It doesn't build composite objects from multiple JOIN statements or that kind of thing. But it does make all Koha table data immediately available to API queries with comparison (=, >, <, >=, <=) to any field, sortable +/- by any field, and LIMITable to a given value. I'll sending the small proof-of-concept patch for a C4::Table with an example test script (a good place to start). This approach is still experimental, so it does not supplant any production code. I am using Fedora 9 and I have downloaded koha v.3.0 and installed Koha, also installed the dependencies of perl, setup the mysql database. never add any changes in apache server. my problem is simple - how to run this application..? note:- there is no such directory[/cgi-bin/koha] found after installation.. if somebody can help me please.. Hi, As I've a few free time, I'm trying to complete a first version of Debian Koha packaging. I've a few questions for koha/zebra/.. guru that I separate in 3 mails. Here is the third mail. Most of the koha configuration (mostly what is asked by Makefile.PL) will be handled by debconf. I needed to know for the following questions if there is a sensible default to the question. Debconf offers to setup a default answer and we also have to setup the level of the question. On a typical basic installation, only question of level 'high' will be asked (other will get the default value). Debconf levels are: * low Very trivial items that have defaults that will work in the vast majority of cases; only control freaks see these. * medium Normal items that have reasonable defaults. * high Items that don't have a reasonable default. * critical Items that will probably break the system without user intervention. So, here are my propositions/questions Using zebra or not: will be selected by the choice of the packages (koha-zebra or koha-nozebra) MARC format for Zebra indexing Default: UNIMARC ? Level: high ? [1] Primary language for Zebra indexing Default: en ? Level: high ? [1] Authorities indexing mode Default: dom ? Level: medium ? [is not dom more powerful than grs1?] Enable SRU? Default: no ? Our public library is in the process of migrating from Follett to KOHA with Liblime's help and we would like to contribute to the discussion re: how reserved items are listed in the catalog. Our current ILS, Follett, displays the status of items as "on hold" as soon as a patron or staff member place a hold on an item and it stays that way until the patron who placed the hold checks it out or the hold is cancelled. We would like to see the same thing in KOHA. While testing out our migrated data in KOHA, I actually made a note abouts "holds" showing up as "available" in both the staff client and the OPAC, and I added this to my list of potential "bugs" to mention to our project manager Beverly. I'm glad to see that this is being discussed. In our public library we see no reason not to display the true status of items that are "on hold." The suggestion "not currently on shelf" seems too confusing for patrons and staff. We agree with Susan Bennett's comment - "We try to give our patrons the best customer service possible so I'm for giving them more complete information." In our opinion, items on hold need to say clearly in the OPAC and staff client that they are "on hold", or we could be looking all over the library for them and they would be sitting on the hold shelf. I have come across another problem related to holds... I'm not sure if this is the right place to bring it up, but I'll describe it anyway. When I go to place a hold in KOHA's OPAC or using the staff client, and I want a particular volume of a multi volume set - for example our library has the DVD set for "Deadwood the complete second season"- KOHA shows you specific volume info on the material details page, but then when you click on "place hold" that info is gone. You can't tell one volume of the set from another, which is a problem if perhaps you have disc 1 and want disc 2 which is checked out by someone else. In the staff client you at least get a barcode, but unless you've previously written the barcode down of the volume you want, you are out of luck. This problem could be solved by including volume info on the page where you "place a hold on a specific copy." Thanks, Adrea Adrea Lund Head of Adult Services Grand County Public Library 257 E. Patron record "contact note"

My library is finally beginning the process of migrating from dev_week to Koha 3. I've noticed something that didn't catch my eye when working with the sample data. In 2.x, the alternate contact section of the member record had a notes field, "altnotes." In Koha 3 there is no longer a notes field associated with "Alternate Contact," but there is now a "contactnote" field associated with the "Alternate address" section. Is this deliberate? My library currently uses the "altnotes" field to record information about the relationship of the alternate contact to the patron. If it were up to me I would simply move the "Contact note" form field into the section labelled "Alternate Contact" and be done with it. -- Owen -- Web Developer Athens County Public Libraries http://www.myacpl.org

Good day, all. Their was a service interruption for bugs.koha.org, koha.org, download.koha.org, etc earlier today. This was result of either some sort of web crawler gone terribly awry or, more likely, a malicious DoS attack. Apparently, some people apparently don't appreciate free software. Not related to this incident, but to use it as an opportunity to give a heads-up about what's coming down the pike, in the near future we will be moving the web service for these sites onto another host. Timeline for 3.0.1

Hi, As Release Maintainer, I have been given gitosis access to rel3.0 So I shall be able to catchup with all the bug fixes patches. What I am aiming at now is issuing a bug fix release on First week of December. That means, branching 3.0.1 on the 15th November, so that translators could have a two weeks time for translations. Tell me if this sounds reasonable and ok for you (translators). You will also need to have the fresher templates. Maybe the Translation manager could have the process update automatically translations and allow ppl for multiple version access ? See you soon. -- Henri-Damien LAURENT
